Everybody knows the story of the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, but do they know the story of her life. Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly almost the whole way around the world before she disappeared in the Pacific Ocean. She had an exciting life before that happened, too. In the book, A Picture Book of Amelia Earhart by David A. Adler and illustrated by Jeff Fisher, tells the fantastic tale of this brave pilot and how she got to flying around the world. The book explains the life of Earhart in a kid friendly way. Starting with when she was born and how she was different than the other girls when she was a kid. Being different is something that a lot of kids can relate to and makes the life of Earhart more relatable to kids. The book then goes through her life as a beginning pilot to when she was accomplishing great achievements. The words are coupled with beautiful painted pictures that expand on the story. This book is a definite must-have in a children’s library collection. | BIBLIO: 1998,Holiday House, Ages 6 to 10, $15.95. REVIEWER: Alyssa Daney FORMAT: Picture Book |

BIOGRAPHY When you first open this book, The Wright Brothers by Pamela Duncan Edwards, you are presented with a pictured timeline of events relating to the first airplane ever flown. This was such a great and intelligent way of making the history of this event come to life as you can visually see how long the process took. The book is written with small squirrels who make funny statements which accompanies the one to two sentences written on each page. This was a very easy read, and would be a good source for young children who are doing book reports, or who just want to read about this time in history. I would highly recommend this book for a classroom or library as young children could read this and learn valuable information on their own. Parrots Over Puerto Rico by Cindy Trumbore
This story tells about Puerto Rico and how there were parrots there long before humans. By the 1970’s only 13 of the birds were still living in the wild. It talks about all of the threats the parrots had to face. They had to face deforestation and many other invasive species. It tells about not only the struggles of the birds, but also how they overcame the struggles to make a recovery. It is a great way to provide an example of how humans can be both helpful and harmful to animals. Interest Level:4 Grade Level Equivalent:5.4 Most of us have heard many many stories about Abraham Lincoln. He was a great man that achieved and changed our world. This book shows Abe's life from young to old. From reading books, to becoming president, even ending slavery. I think this is a great book, the pictures are phenomenal. I found it extremely interesting to even read quotes that Abraham Lincoln himself had said. I would recommend this more for a teacher to read and show to the class, so he/she can explain some of the things happening. Publisher: Disney-Hyperion 2008 Ages: 7-10 Biographical picture book Haley Burdette Before Jacques Cousteau became an internationally known oceanographer and champion of the seas, he was a curious little boy. In this lovely biography, poetic text and pretty paintings, combine to create a portrait of Jacques Cousteau's life. Jacques was a boy who was always fascinated with the water. Once he read about a man who survived underwater by breathing through a tube, but when he tried it, the experiment was a flop. He was always experimenting with one thing or another and his curiosity was insatiable. Another thing that held great fascination for him was movies and how they were made. He saved up his money and bought a camera. Throughout Jacques's life he was a naval officer, explorer, conservationist, filmmaker, innovator, scientist, photographer, author and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water. This book is beautifully illustrated and written. It's a great children's book to show us the beauty of life and how it is often forgotten in our busy lives. PUBLISHER: Chronicle Books AGES: 6 - 9 years : $16.99 REVIEWED BY: Crystal Scott cheryl harness Filled to the brim with interesting historical information, this book brings the story of Benjamin Franklin to life! The story begins with the story of Benjamin's birth and how he grew up working in a printing shop. Benjamin was not content with that however, and began his own adventures at the age of 17. He set out to travel and broke his apprenticeship agreement with an older brother in order to do it. Benjamin spent the majority of his life traveling from the colonies to Europe and back. He spent these trips learning more about scientific topics and when the American Revolution started, Benjamin spent his time in France charming Louis XVI to support the American cause. He got what he wanted and ended up playing an amazing part in forming our nation. This book has wonderful illustrations on every page and includes quotes from Benjamin Franklin himself at the bottom of the page. This book is a great addition to any biography collection. At first Wilson's pictures were pretty bad, but with his optimistic attitude he progressively became better. Wilson later wrote a book about snow and published his pictures in a magazine. This story is an excellent example of how the Macy’s Day Parade became the great and wonderful event we know it as today. The story portrays the life of Tony Sarg and how important of a role he played in the growth of the Macy’s Day Parade. Due to Tony Sarg being a well-known puppeteer and illustrator, he was described as “America’s Puppet Master.” Throughout the story, the reader understands the hard work and dedication that Tony Sarg put into the designing process of the Macy Parade balloons. The illustrations in this book are simply captivating. Melissa Sweet adds pictures of real objects like keys, ripped paint swatches, wooden blocks, fabric, buttons and even the author’s own puppets that she had made. By creating the foundation of mixed media collages, the author transforms her well-written story into one that is lifelike and realistic. This book would be great to read to a classroom right before Thanksgiving and incorporate the story into a history lesson. Since the story discusses Tony Sarg and the parade, the lesson could go deeper into the life of Sarg, the puppets of the parade and how everything comes together. The students could have an inside look into what happened behind the scenes of the creation of the great Macy’s Day Parade. Biographical Picture Book.
