Peter Brown was born in 1979 in Hopewell, New Jersey. He always loved to tell whimsical tales of characters and scenes from his imagination. He began to write down these tales as a teenager. Brown went to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California and got a Bachelors of Fine Arts in illustration. While taking several courses on children’s books, he realized his love for making them. Brown moved to Brooklyn, New York after college to be close to the publishing industry. While working on animated TV shows he got his first contract to illustrate a picture book. His first published book that he illustrated was Flight of the Dodo.
Brown started illustrating and writing many books after that and has thirteen books so far, including the New York Times bestsellers The Curious Garden, Children Make Terrible Pets, and Mr. Tiger Goes Wild. The book Creepy Carrots! also won Brown a 2013 Caldecott Honor. Some more awards that he won would include a Horn Book Award, two E.B. White Awards, two E.B. White Honors, a Children’s Choice Award for Illustrator of the Year, two Irma Black Honors, a Golden Kite Award, a New York Times Best Illustrated Book Award and five New York Times bestsellers. His latest book is My Teacher is a Monster! (No, I am Not.). Along with illustrating picture books he also has a couple chapter books that he illustrated. Brown’s art style is generally colorful and contemporary. In his Caldecott Honor book, Creepy Carrots!, Brown uses classic horror movie colors of black and white, but then adds in that stark orange for the carrots and other orange things in the book. He says that his inspiration for this art style was drawn from his favorite TV series, The Twilight Zone (See Video Below).
