Melissa Sweet’s Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade explores the origin of the Macy’s Day Parade and how it came about. This story is an excellent example of how the Macy’s Day Parade became the great and wonderful event we know it as today. The story portrays the life of Tony Sarg and how important of a role he played in the growth of the Macy’s Day Parade. Due to Tony Sarg being a well-known puppeteer and illustrator, he was described as “America’s Puppet Master.” Throughout the story, the reader understands the hard work and dedication that Tony Sarg put into the designing process of the Macy Parade balloons. The illustrations in this book are simply captivating. Melissa Sweet adds pictures of real objects like keys, ripped paint swatches, wooden blocks, fabric, buttons and even the author’s own puppets that she had made. By creating the foundation of mixed media collages, the author transforms her well-written story into one that is lifelike and realistic. This book would be great to read to a classroom right before Thanksgiving and incorporate the story into a history lesson. Since the story discusses Tony Sarg and the parade, the lesson could go deeper into the life of Sarg, the puppets of the parade and how everything comes together. The students could have an inside look into what happened behind the scenes of the creation of the great Macy’s Day Parade. Biographical Picture Book.
