![]() Written by Jenny Offill and illustrated by Chris Appelhans Sparky! is the classic tale of a child who wants a pet. There are many lessons that readers will be able to learn from reading Sparky. There is the lesson of patience. This is seen while waiting for Sparky to arrive, waiting for Spaky to arrive (it took two whole days before the main character even sees him awake) and while waiting for Sparky to fetch while trying to learn tricks. There is also the lesson that “a promise is a promise.” That phrase is used many times throughout the story, which shows how important it is to the main character.Friendship also comes in many shapes and sizes throughout the story. There is not only Sparky, but there is the school librarian, Mary Potts (a little know-it-all), and Mrs. Edwin (the crossing guard). The illustrations were simple and yet, they added just the right touch of adorable to the story. Even with the limited color palette readers are able to clearly read the expression on Sparky’s face, which adds a touch of humor as his expression gets less and less happy during his training for the sloth extravaganza. The books shows that pet ownership doesn't always go the way that the owner thinks that it should and that pets (especially sloths) are highly unlikely to do anything that they don’t want to do. But in the end having a pet is worth it and pets will always love their owners, they all show it in different ways. -Andrea Dow printed in- 2014
