By David WiesnerThis Caldecott award winner picture book tells the story of a young boy’s dreams through pictures alone. The objects around the boy’s bedroom seem to inspire his dreams. As the boy falls asleep with his book, one of the pages drifts off into the distance to start his adventure. He travels through many different “worlds” as he dreams; from a castle constructed of chess pieces housing kings, queens and knights, to flying on the breeze with book pages and swans, which seem to be made of leaves. The characters are different and interesting throughout the different lands, the boy also changes at one point, growing into a giant that towers over the other characters. The amazing illustrations are so detailed, one could stare at a single page for an extended period of time, leaving the reader, young or old, to imagine the storyline. For educators, this book is a great tool to help young students grow in their narrative skills, even if they cannot read yet. Category: Picture Book. 1988, Lothrop, Lee & Shepard Books, $4.95. ages 4+ Reviewer: Kelsey Means Mr. Wuffles is a wordless masterpiece written and illustrated by the great David Wiesner. This book is about a cat that has a toy with aliens living inside of the toy. Once the cat starts to play with the toy there is a sudden jolt that causes the aliens to fall out. Mr. Wuffles then starts to play with the aliens and causes them great distress. Once the cat falls asleep, the aliens go out trying to find part of their ship, when they suddenly realize it is broken. The cat then wakes up and starts chasing them around the kitchen. A ladybug however distracts the cat, and the aliens go underneath the cabinet to hide. They then discover others are trapped as well. The bugs help the aliens to fix their ship so they can safely leave and return home. This picture book is great for children and adults with active imaginations. Author Adam Lehrhaupt urges the reader to NOT open this book or else they'll let the monkeys out! But who can resist? As the reader flips through the pages they'll see all the chaos that starts as the monkeys make a huge mess. Matthew Forsythe illustrates this book perfectly, and even keeps the reader entertained on the pages with no words by making them wonder what will happen next. As Lehrhaupt warns the curious reader by saying, "It could be WORSE! Do not tempt fate by turning the page", more craziness begins! When a flock of toucans and a giant alligator appear, the reader gets to be part of the solution by capturing the animals. This book will surely make the audience laugh, and with a title like that, any child will want to jump right into reading this book! Illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans Madeline is a little girl who goes to a school with a 11 other girls. They all dress the same and do the same thing everyday. Then all of the sudden they realize Madeline is different. She is not scared of anything not mice or tigers. One night the teacher, Miss Clavel, awoke afraid. She rushed down the stairs to find Madeline screaming in pain and Miss Clavel had the doctor rush over. The doctor carried her back to the hospitals and she had immediate surgery on her appendix. The end of the book shows Madeline proud of her scar and the other girls all jealous. Bemelmans's story is an exemplary model for biblio-therapy for those children who have had appendicitis or other organ problems that they need surgery. The pictures also perfectly illustrate the story and even explain the story more. The simple colors make the pictures not so overwhelming. The reader will be amused at this simplistic yet endearing story. ISBN: 0-14-050198-3 Trains remain a perennial favorite of the preschool set and are in constant demand from young children (and parents seeking relief from yet another re-reading of the train books already at home). Light's Trains Go is a sturdy board book measuring 6x12 inches. The interior illustrations take advantage of the 24 inch full spread, depicting various trains "trip trap," "woo wooo," and "zooosh"-ing down the track. Rendered in watercolor, the illustrations take advantage of bleeding colors and soft lines while still appearing crisp against the abundant white space. The text is limited to the description of each type of train followed by an onomatopoeia for the sound it makes; "The old steam train goes, clang clang clang toot toot!" All of the primary colors make an appearance in the illustrations and the print is oversized so even in a small group context individual letters will be visible to children sitting in the audience. Pair this with Crew's Freight Train and Lewis's Chugga Chugga Choo Choo for a surefire hit at story time. Category: Picture Book. 2011, Chronicle Books, $8.99. Ages 3 to 5. Roseanne Perkins |
