Madeline is a little girl who goes to a school with a 11 other girls. They all dress the same and do the same thing everyday. Then all of the sudden they realize Madeline is different. She is not scared of anything not mice or tigers. One night the teacher, Miss Clavel, awoke afraid. She rushed down the stairs to find Madeline screaming in pain and Miss Clavel had the doctor rush over. The doctor carried her back to the hospitals and she had immediate surgery on her appendix. The end of the book shows Madeline proud of her scar and the other girls all jealous. Bemelmans's story is an exemplary model for biblio-therapy for those children who have had appendicitis or other organ problems that they need surgery. The pictures also perfectly illustrate the story and even explain the story more. The simple colors make the pictures not so overwhelming. The reader will be amused at this simplistic yet endearing story.
