Trains remain a perennial favorite of the preschool set and are in constant demand from young children (and parents seeking relief from yet another re-reading of the train books already at home). Light's Trains Go is a sturdy board book measuring 6x12 inches. The interior illustrations take advantage of the 24 inch full spread, depicting various trains "trip trap," "woo wooo," and "zooosh"-ing down the track. Rendered in watercolor, the illustrations take advantage of bleeding colors and soft lines while still appearing crisp against the abundant white space. The text is limited to the description of each type of train followed by an onomatopoeia for the sound it makes; "The old steam train goes, clang clang clang toot toot!" All of the primary colors make an appearance in the illustrations and the print is oversized so even in a small group context individual letters will be visible to children sitting in the audience. Pair this with Crew's Freight Train and Lewis's Chugga Chugga Choo Choo for a surefire hit at story time. Category: Picture Book. 2011, Chronicle Books, $8.99. Ages 3 to 5.
