After being swept up in a cyclone and taken away from the horribly grey land of Kansas, Dorothy finds herself (along with her dog Toto) in the wonderfully oddly colored land of Oz. All the young Dorothy wants to do is get home and she is told that the Wizard will certainly be able to send her there if she follows the yellow-brick road and visits him in the Emerald City. Off on an adventure Dorothy quickly meets the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Cowardly Lion who all realize that they too have things that they want to ask the wizard for. When the crew reaches the Emerald city they all individually meet the Wizard who tells them all the same thing, the Wicked Witch of the West has to be defeated if they are to receive their wishes. The wizard is amazed to hear that they do in fact defeat the witch and he does his best to fulfill their wishes. Eventually Dorothy does get home, but not in the way that readers would originally imagine. This is a classic fantasy read that every library should have on its shelves since readers both young and old will be able to enjoy together.
