The Universe by Simon is an informational book on, well, the universe. It explains everything that we know about the universe in a kid friendly version. However, there could have been a lot more done to this book to make it more interesting and fun to kids. The way that the sentences are worded in this book will leave kids falling asleep within the first two paragraphs. The font and pictures don’t help much in this aspect. If the pictures were presented in a better way than just slapping them onto the page with a not to brilliant, but easy to read font right next to it, it might just make kids want to read more about the universe. This book, however, will do just the opposite and kill kid’s interest in the universe. The information in this book just drones on and on without any breaks. There is not a table of contents in the book to tell what information is presented in the book and where, so it forces you to read the whole book just to find what you were looking for. There is also no glossary for words that kids won’t know going into read this book. Overall, this is a book that I would not suggest to have in a children’s library collection. There are a lot of better and more interesting books out there about the universe for kids to read. BIBLIO: 1998, Morrow Junior Books, Ages 6 to 12, $6.99.
