BIBlO: 2008, Henry Holt and Company, LLC, Ages 8 to 12, $16.95. REVIEWER: Alyssa Daney FORMAT: Middle Reader ISBN: 978-0-8050-8674-4 ISBN: 0-8050-8674-9 | A brave healer named Rosa, in the war for Cuba’s freedom, does not lose hope that her country will persevere. In the book of poems, The Surrender Tree, a tale about Cuba’s struggle for freedom is told in beautiful narrative poems. It is clear to see why this book has won the Pura Belpre Medal and a Newberry Honor along with other awards. Based on historical figures, Engle tells how the wars that eventually freed Cuba of Spain control affect the people and environment. Told in different point of views from the healer Rosa, her husband Jose, the slave hunter Lieutenant Death, the King of Spain, and a young girl named Silvia, this story lets the reader understand how the war affected everyone who was involved. These poems would be easier for children to read and understand because they are written in narrative form, telling the story directly to the reader without many metaphors or similes. This is a great book for all library collections to have readily available for children to check out. |
