BIBLIO: 2006, Knopf Books for Young Readers, Ages 12 to 17, $12.99. REVIEWER: Alyssa Daney FORMAT: Young Adult | The Book Thief is a story about a small foster girl named Liesel Meminger who is living in Germany during World War II. She is going through daily life in Germany at this time. Learning how to read with her foster father, stealing books to read from, and also harboring a Jewish fist fighter named Max from the Nazis. Or at least that is how Death, the narrator, tells the story. The Book Thief is a story about history, bravery, adventure, family and friendship, and thievery. It is a touching tale that the reader will not be able to put down until they are finished reading. This book could be used in classrooms everywhere and if grouped with the movie there are endless possibilities. This book is a must have for a children’s library collection because it provides an interesting story of World War II that would spark children’s interest in learning more about the subject. |
