In this classic tale readers are able to follow the story of a lifetime friendship between a young boy and a black stallion. The two end up becoming stranded on an island together and have to learn how to trust each other so that they are both able to survive. The unlikely friendship begins when Alec frees the black stallion from the shipwreck of the steamer ship Drake. The stallion then pulls Alec to an island which is where the two remain until they are rescued by a freighter ship. The black stallion is everything that Alec has always wanted and he has dreams of training him and keeping him in New York. The stallion will not settle down easily in his new lifestyle, but Alec trains him at night and earns his trust. Black (the name the stallion is given) is eventually trained enough to be a racehorse and he is a brutal racer. The descriptions of the races are overly descriptive, especially the violence that occurs. Although Black eventually wins in the end, the readers have to partake in every gory detail which may be too much to imagine for some younger readers, especially horse-lovers. Black Beauty is classic that is able to tell a tale of friendship to older children, making it the perfect addition to any library’s shelves. year published 1941 published by Random House Publishing price 5.99 Ages 10 to 14 reviewer- Andrea Dow
