Most are familiar with the classic children’s rhyme, “Mary had a Little Lamb, but a less common text is, “Maria had a Little Llama”. “Maria had a Little Llama is a bilingual presentation of the orginal classic children’s rhyme. It tells of a young with a girl who loves her pet and her pet loves her very much so that he follows her everywhere she goes, even to school. A llama visit at school surely makes for an entertaining school, for everyone but the teacher who makes him leave. Maria’s llama was loyal and waited outside impatiently for Maria to come out. The author presents a straightforward version of the rhyme, adding just enough new elements to transform it into a story. The is in both the English and the Spanish, which are placed together on the page with the English in bold and positioned above the Spanish. The amount of text per page is brief and appropriate for a bilingual read-aloud. The illustrations transport the readers to Peru. This book is most definitely an appropriate read for a diverse classroom, or even if the classroom isn’t diverse. As an aspiring educator, I can think of many ways to incorporate this text into my lessons. This text is both enjoyable and convenient to use in any elementary classroom. Jessica Rago |
