Maniac Magee is the story about a boy who is actually named Jeffrey Lionel Magee, although everyone calls him Maniac because of all the odd things that he does. Maniac really is just a normal boy, he doesn’t have any superpowers, although he is a bit odd in the things that he does. At night most kids go home, have a meal with their family and then go to bed. Maniac would most certainly do these things, only he is an orphan. Instead of going home he goes to the zoo and sleeps in the buffalo pen, or in a baseball shed. He doesn’t stay in one area though, he goes and runs anywhere his feet take him, whether it be on the black or white side of town. While running he meets quite a few people whom he forms lasting (albeit unusual) friendships with everyone that he seems to meet. There are some odd myths that pop up around the boy who runs all over town, and unbelievably he lives up to them all. He’s known for untying knots so he tackles the biggest knot in town and successfully unknots it, he beats everykid that will challenge him to a race. But two things are able to be told about Maniac with 100% certainty: he is responsible for the East side and the West side finally realizing that the other side isn’t as bad as the seemed and the one thing he wanted more than anything was to have someone who would call him home. Jerry Spinelli has created a wacky and delightfully entertaining story that older children will be unable to put down, which is why every library should have a copy of Maniac Magee on its shelves.
